Finland’s news portal, verkkouutiset.fi, ran a feature drawing attention of its readers to one of the articles in the October 2018 issue of the ICDS monthly magazine, Diplomaatia.

The article that was reported to the Finnish audience by verkkouutiset.fi was written by ICDS Research Fellow and Head of Studies Tomas Jermalavičius and analysed some trends in the strategic debate on deterring and containing Russia. The portal highlighted some of the article’s key points: first, that despite Russia’s assurances about using military force in international relations only as the last resort and about having no intentions to use nuclear weapons first, Moscow has amply demonstrated that it cannot be trusted on showing such restraint; and, second, that Russia’s ability to weave together military and non-military instruments of power for the purposes of destabilisation and coercion calls for broad-based containment efforts extending well beyond the military domain.
