Although perceptions about anti-Western tendencies or long-standing Soviet era ties to Syria as the sole drivers of Russian foreign policy towards Syria persist, a more detailed analysis reveals that Russia’s policy is to a large part driven by its attitude towards the international – and particularly Western – efforts to resolve the conflict.
