On 9 October 2018 Piret Pernik, ICDS Research Fellow, participated in the panel discussion „Civil Advocacy for the Digital 3 Seas Project” at the 4th European Cybersecurity Forum (CYBERSEC) in Krakow, Poland.
The CYBERSEC is an annual public policy conference dedicated to the strategic challenges of cybersecurity. Piret Pernik spoke at the panel about potential cooperation areas for the Digital 3 Seas Project. She underlined the need to develop ICT and cybersecurity skills and talent across the 12 member states of the project. She pointed out that digital cooperation should be oriented towards solving identified and pressing problems, and operationalised into tangible projects. She brought plenty of examples of such successful bi- and multilateral projects in Estonia. Nordic-Baltic region and the Baltic States cooperate closely, most notably in developing AI and 5G, but also in the area of cross-border e-services. The best practices and lessons identified from these projects should be shared with countries of the 3 Seas Project. Piret Pernik noted that public awareness about the Digital 3 Seas Project in the three Baltic countries is still low, and civil society advocacy organisations should organise tailored events in order to help the government, industry, and academia to better understand what this new cooperation can offer to each of them.
CYBERSEC brought together more than 1000 participants from 20 countries, and featured many renowned speakers, among others Antonio Missiroli Assistant Secretary General for Emerging Security Challenges, NATO; Melissa Hathaway, President, Hathaway Global Strategies, LLC; Ambassador Marina Kaljurand, Chair, Global Commission on the Stability of Cyberspace; Christopher Painter, Commissioner, Global Commission on Stability of Cyberspace.
