On March 10th the ICDS Research Fellow Silva Kiili participated on the Annual International Conference 1325 „Women, Peace and Security“.
UN Security Council Resolution 1325 prompts significant and important attention to the experience of women during armed conflict. The Resolution set out a range of measures intended to include women in the prevention, management and resolution of conflict. Silva Kiili made the presentation based on the survey „Women in Military Structures: Motivation and Challenges“. To raise women’s participation in the defense sector, public awareness of women’s equal rights of contribution to the defense sector must be raised as well as women’s pursuit to make a career in defense forces. Contributing to the defense sector provides women with knowledge and skills in crisis situation as well as gives the opportunities to participate in decision making processes in higher level positions. There were speakers from UK, USA, Norway, Israel and Estonia. The conference was attended by around 100 participants from government, public, private and civil society organizations and broadcast live on Estonia‘s most popular online news portal, Postimees.
