The International Centre for Defence Studies hosted a seminar ‘The European Union’s Stress Test for Its Multilateral Approach: Prospects for Fostering Regional Cooperation’ on March 2–3 in the framework of the EU4Seas collaborative research project for the analysis of sub-regional multilateralism in four maritime basins (Baltic, Black, Caspian and Mediterranean). The seminar was co-organised with the Barcelona Centre for International Affairs (CIDOB).
Policy papers on functional and regional issues were presented at the seminar with the aim of adding a comparative dimension to the analysis of each sea basin based on four key themes. The functional papers focused on Politics and Security, Environmental and Maritime Issues, Energy and Transport and the Four Freedoms in relation to EU policies, while taking into account their effects on sub-regional multilateralism. The regional papers extracted analytical and policy-relevant conclusions for EU policies on the sea basins.
