On 13-17 March, the Netherlands hosted one of the events of Nimble Titan 2018 – an integrated air and missile defence experimentation campaign led by the United States (US) Strategic Command.

In this campaign, representatives from 24 nations, including regions in Europe, North America, the Middle East, and Asia-Pacific came together for a series of interactive policy, planning, and crisis management events. The aim was to develop novel approaches and ideas of how a diverse multinational coalition could deal with a set of threats that come through the air domain – particularly ballistic and cruise missiles. This is already the third 2-year long cycle in which Estonia participates with an interagency team consisting of air and missile defence experts from the ministries of defence and foreign affairs as well as the Estonian Air Force. Following its successful involvement in the Nimble Titan 2014 and 2016 campaigns, ICDS is also contributing to in the 2018 cycle. ICDS Head of Studies, Tomas Jermalavičius participated in the event in the Netherlands as a member of the wargame control group. The tasks of this group were to ensure that the event unfolded in accordance with a pre-written script, was sufficiently stimulating to the delegations of the involved nations, and generated new insights into the complex strategic environment in which integrated air and missile defence is planned and executed.
