On January 19 ICDS Research Fellow Helga Kalm spoke to the Commission on Foreign Affairs of the Parliament of Estonia about the recent escalation of tensions in relations between Saudi Arabia and Iran.

She said that the relations between the two countries have been relatively bad for a while as the countries are engages in proxy wars in Syria and Yemen. Kalm was especially worried that the escalation of tensions might result in increased fighting in Syria between government forces and the moderate opposition, which in turn might create a vacuum for Daesh to gain ground again. Following the speech the Members of the Commission had the possibility to ask questions.
