Dr Liam Fox MP visits ICDS

On 7 May 2014, the International Centre for Defence Studies was pleased to host Dr Liam Fox, Member of the British Parliament and former Minister of Defence. Dr Fox delivered a speech entitled “European Security: Sharing Risks and Responsibilities”, presenting his vision of how NATO can bring Europe and the United States together to ensure economic strength, military power and political cohesion. Acknowledging that this vision will not be easy to implement, he cited some key risks to peace, prosperity, and security: lower defence spending, lack of European political unity, dependence on Russian energy, increased indebtedness, cyber threats, wishful thinking vis-à-vis Russia, and finally, the Kremlin’s violation of international law. Dr Fox concluded by calling for the Alliance to continue to uphold its principles while developing the ability to adapt politically, economically, and technologically to emerging and evolving threats.
