Kadri Liik, Director of the International Centre for Defence Studies (ICDS), has resigned. She will be replaced by Martin Hurt from Monday, August 08. Kadri Liik will continue at ICDS as a researcher and as the main organiser of the Lennart Meri Conference.
Liik’s letter of resignation was accepted by ICDS’s Steering Board at its meeting on August 05.
Liik said that her resignation was connected to the misuse of ICDS’s financial resources by the Centre’s former Office Manager. “The complete review of this incident is now nearly complete and in the light of this, I believe that it will be easier for both the Centre and myself if I resign from the role of Director.”
ICDS discovered the possible misuse of its financial resources during a routine annual audit at the end of May and ended the employment contract of the suspect in June.  ICDS also reported the incident to the Police.
“The Steering Board supports Kadri Liik’s decision to resign from the position of Director. At the same time, I’m glad that Kadri will stay on at the ICDS and continue with her research projects as well as being the main Lennart  Meri Conference organiser,” said Lauri Mälksoo the Chairman of the Steering Board. “The Steering Board has discussed the situation and given instructions to ICDS improve the organisation of its work and financial management.”
The newly appointed Director, Martin Hurt, previously worked as a defence Researcher at ICDS.
