Today, May 31, 2013 the International Centre for Defence Studies was pleased to share its expertise on energy security in Estonia and the Nordic-Baltic states during a visit to the Centre by a delegation from the British Parliament.
The Liberal Democrats delegation consisted of Baron (Robin) Teverson of Tregony as well as MPs Sir Malcolm Bruce, Simon Hughes, Andrew Stunell, and Stephen Williams. The issue of facilitating a free-market energy trading system and reducing dependence on monopolistic suppliers in the Baltic-Nordic region has become a key topic of interest within the European Council, especially to the UK. ICDS Research Fellow Emmet Tuohy presented an overview of the energy situation in Estonia and its neighbour countries, arguing that active EU support was needed to achieve the strategic goals of ending energy dependency and integrating the region more fully into European markets. A lively discussion followed, covering topics ranging from the central Estonian-Finnish debate over the location of the planned Baltic liquefied natural gas (LNG) terminal to nuclear facilities in Lithuania and electricity self-sufficiency in the Baltic region.
