Veli-Pekka Tynkkynen

Non-Resident Research Fellow

Dr Veli-Pekka Tynkkynen is a professor in Russian Environmental Studies at the Aleksanteri Institute, Finnish Centre for Russian and Eastern European Studies at the University of Helsinki, and holds the title of a Docent in Russian energy and natural resource policies at the Finnish Defence University. He joined the ICDS as a non-resident research fellow in February 2023. He leads a research group focusing on energy and environmental policies, energy security, and political power in Russia and Europe, and has led several academic research projects with wide international collaboration funded by the Research Council of Finland, the Prime Minister’s Office, the Nordic Council of Ministers, Business Finland, and the Kone Foundation. Dr Tynkkynen has a wide track record in teaching at European universities, has delivered public talks, frequently gives expert statements for authorities, and is an oft-asked commentator for the media. He outlines his multidisciplinary take on Russia in his book The Energy of Russia. Hydrocarbon Culture and Climate Change (Edward Elgar, 2019) and unfolds Europe’s relations with Russia through the prisms of energy, violence, and the environment in his book How Europe got Russia wrong (Edward Elgar, 2024).
