Dr. Jade McGlynn is an expert on Russian foreign policy, ideology, and memory politics, with a particular focus on Russia’s war on Ukraine. Trained as a cultural historian, her work centres on war propaganda and identity formation in Russia, especially in the context of Russia’s aggression against Ukraine since 2014. Based in Kharkiv for much of her research, she regularly travels to frontline areas and has written widely for both policy and media audiences, including on resistance in the occupied territories of Ukraine, Russian societal tensions, and regional security dynamics inside Russia.
Beyond academia, she was a key author and strategist behind the SkyShield initiative and has been actively involved in supporting Ukraine’s defence, including fundraising for the armed forces, advising international government projects, coordinating high-level visits to Ukraine, working with Ukrainian IDP and veterans organisations, supporting orphanages and children’s homes in Kharkiv region, and conducting ongoing research into the deoccupied and temporarily occupied regions of Ukraine. She is the author of Russia’s War (Polity, 2023) and Memory Makers: The Politics of the Past in Putin’s Russia (Bloomsbury Academic, 2023), as well as numerous peer-reviewed articles. She is a regular contributor to major Western media outlets and is frequently invited to speak publicly on issues related to Russia and the war in Ukraine.
She holds a DPhil from the University of Oxford, an MA by Research from the University of Birmingham, and a BA from Oxford University. She speaks fluent Russian and Ukrainian, alongside proficient Spanish, French, and Serbian.
