Volunteers Defend the Baltic States

Dutch newspaper Trouw published an article on the role of various voluntary organisations in defence of the Baltic states.

Estonia’s Defence League, Kaitseliit, featured prominently in the article, and ICDS Head of Studies Tomas Jermalavičius was quoted saying that the Defence League “is a platform for involving all society in security policy through voluntary work. The organization has traditionally been a way of promoting patriotism.” He also noted that, “as a result of the increased military threat, people are more involved. [Defence League] exercises take place more often and became ever more demanding.”
