Maria Mälksoo joined the ICDS team as a researcher on October 1, 2007.
Maria obtained her doctorate from the University of Cambridge (the Centre of International Studies) in October. Her thesis dealt with the Polish and Baltic post-Cold War politics of becoming European. She has received her M.Phil. in International Relations (2003) from the same centre. She has previously studied sociology and political science at the University of Tartu, Estonia, and the University of Montana, USA. Maria has worked in the Policy Planning Department of the Estonian Ministry of Defence and taught at the University of Tartu, the Estonian Business School and the University of Cambridge. She has published her research in Akadeemia, Diplomaatia,Trames: Journal of Humanities and Social Sciences, Cambridge Review of International Affairs and Security Dialogue.
At the ICDS, she will research the question of a new strategic concept for NATO. Her broader fields of research include the role of “New Europe” in the global war on terror, transatlantic relations and European memory politics. Maria continues to teach critical security studies in the Department of Political Science at the University of Tartu.
