Sugio Takahashi

Head of the defence division at the National Institute for Defense Studies (NIDS)

Sugio Takahashi is the head of the defence division at the National Institute for Defense Studies (NIDS), the research arm of Japan’s Ministry of Defence in Tokyo. He was a Director of Policy Simulation Office, NIDS from 2016 to 2020 and the deputy director of the office of strategic planning of Ministry of Defence from 2008 to 2016. In that capacity, he was in a drafting team of the National Defence Programme Guidelines of 2010 and 2013 and Guidelines for US-Japan Defence Cooperation. He has published extensively in the areas of nuclear strategy, the Japan-US alliance, and East Asian regional security including China’s Strategic Arsenal: Worldview, Doctrine, and Systems (Georgetown University Press, 2021) (eds. James M Smith and Paul L Bolt). He holds an MA from the Waseda University in Japan and an MA from George Washington University in the USA.
